Climbing Mount Meru: Tanzania's Underrated Second Peak

📅 2024-10-22 6 min read✍️ AMG Safaris Team
Mount Meru is perhaps the most underrated climb in East Africa. At 4,566 metres, it is Africa's fifth highest peak — but it attracts a tiny fraction of the attention given to Kilimanjaro, which it spectacularly frames from the west. This guide explains why Meru deserves a place on every serious climber's list.

Why Climb Mount Meru?

  • Wildlife on the trail: The climb goes through Arusha National Park — you may encounter buffalo, giraffe, colobus monkeys, and elephant en route to the summit
  • Spectacular views of Kilimanjaro: On clear mornings, the view of Kili rising above the clouds from Meru's summit ridge is extraordinary
  • Far fewer crowds: While Kilimanjaro hosts 50,000+ climbers per year, Meru sees a fraction of that
  • Excellent Kilimanjaro acclimatisation: Many serious Kili climbers do Meru first to prime their acclimatisation response
  • 4 days only: A compact expedition that delivers big mountain experiences

The Momella Route: Day by Day

Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) → Miriakamba Hut (2,541m)

The trail begins across open grassland, crosses the Ngare Nanyuki River, and ascends through animal-rich mountain forest. Black and white colobus monkeys are frequently seen in the giant Podocarpus trees. Buffalo are common — an armed ranger accompanies all groups.

Day 2: Miriakamba → Saddle Hut (3,570m) + Optional Little Meru (3,794m)

A more demanding day ascending through increasingly alpine terrain. The crater rim comes into view, revealing the dramatic inner cliffs of the extinct volcano. An afternoon hike to Little Meru gives sunset views across to Kilimanjaro.

Day 3: Summit Day — Saddle Hut → Socialist Peak (4,566m)

A midnight start ascending the exposed crater rim. The trail is narrow with steep drops on either side — not for those with vertigo. The summit at Socialist Peak offers one of Africa's most dramatic sunrise panoramas: Kilimanjaro to the east, the Maasai Steppe to the south, and the Kenyan border to the north.

Day 4: Descent to Momella Gate

A satisfying descent through all the ecological zones you ascended — tropical rainforest, montane woodland, open grassland — often with excellent wildlife encounters as you return to the gate.

Mount Meru vs Kilimanjaro

Meru is technically more demanding than Kilimanjaro's standard routes — the summit ridge is narrow and exposed. But at 4,566m, the altitude is less extreme. Many experienced Kilimanjaro guides recommend Meru as the ideal warm-up: it builds mountain confidence, improves acclimatisation, and is genuinely beautiful.
