Tour Overview

This 4-day safari is all about timing and location — taking you where the great migration actually is. From December to early March, the herds gather in the Ndutu region for the dramatic calving season, which usually kicks off in mid-January.

Part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, Ndutu offers front-row seats to thousands of wildebeest giving birth on the open plains, with predators never far behind. The journey starts with a classic safari day in Tarangire, known for its ancient baobabs and large elephant herds, followed by a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater.

Arusha – Tarangire National Park

Today your safari takes place in Tarangire National Park. This is one of the most interesting parks in Tanzania — the river of the same name flows through the park, where giraffes, zebras, antelopes and buffaloes come to drink. These animals attract predators, which is why many lions live in Tarangire. In the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only source of drinking water for many kilometres around. Large herds of elephants come to Tarangire, making it home to the largest population of elephants in Northern Tanzania for most of the year. Elephants are not intimidated by visitors and often come quite close to safari vehicles.

Karatu – Ndutu Area in Ngorongoro

After breakfast your safari takes place in the south-western corner of the Ngorongoro — an area called Ndutu, which borders the Serengeti. Very few other tourists venture here, meaning you will feel like you have the place to yourself. The Ndutu area is on the Great Migration route and it is here, from late January to mid-March, that the wildebeest give birth. During the calving months, visitors can see thousands of baby wildebeest arrive into the world. One of the unique traits of these animals is that they can walk within minutes of birth and run within hours — an ability essential for survival.

Ndutu Area – Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

After breakfast we descend 600m into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. The crater is one of the most densely populated African wildlife areas in the world and is home to an estimated 30,000 animals including some of Tanzania's remaining black rhino. You will see herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. A huge population of predators — lions, cheetahs, hyenas and elusive leopards — makes the crater extraordinary. We will enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor and later depart to Arusha.
