The Four Main Routes at a Glance
Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) authorises several routes to the summit. These four are the most commonly used by guided groups:
- Lemosho (8 days): Most scenic, best acclimatisation, highest success rate
- Machame (6 days): Most popular, dramatic scenery, challenging ascent
- Marangu (6 days): Only route with hut accommodation, most accessible
- Rongai (6 days): Only route from the north, less crowded, high success rate

Lemosho Route – 8 Days
Best for: Scenic experience + summit success
The Lemosho Route approaches from the west, crossing the pristine Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit. It is consistently rated the most beautiful route on the mountain — the approach through intact montane forest, the vast Shira Plateau, and the dramatic Barranco Wall all contribute to an exceptional experience.
The 8-day duration provides superior acclimatisation compared to 6-day routes — this directly translates to a higher summit success rate. If you have the time, Lemosho is almost universally recommended by experienced guides.
- Success rate: Highest among all routes
- Scenery: Outstanding — pristine, remote, varied
- Crowds: Lower than Machame
- Best for: First-time climbers, photography enthusiasts, those prioritising summit success

Machame Route – 6 Days
Best for: Adventure + dramatic scenery
The 'Whiskey Route' is Kilimanjaro's most popular climb. It rewards trekkers with extraordinary views of Kibo's southern glaciers, an ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, and Shira Plateau sunsets. The tented camp accommodation adds a genuine adventure feel.
The 6-day duration is shorter than ideal for acclimatisation, but the 'climb high, sleep low' profile mitigates this. Summit success rates are good for fit, experienced trekkers.
- Success rate: Good
- Scenery: Excellent — Barranco Wall, Shira views
- Crowds: High (most popular route)
- Best for: Experienced hikers, adventurous travellers
Marangu Route – 6 Days
Best for: Comfort + accessibility
The only route with dormitory-style hut accommodation, earning it the nickname 'Coca-Cola Route' for its relative accessibility. The trail is well-worn, the gradient more gentle than Machame, and the solar-powered huts provide a comfortable base each night.
The main drawback is that the ascent and descent follow the same path — meaning less scenery variety — and the acclimatisation profile is less favourable than longer routes.
- Success rate: Moderate
- Scenery: Pleasant forested approach
- Crowds: Moderate
- Best for: First-time altitude trekkers, those preferring shelter to tents
Rongai Route – 6 Days
Best for: Solitude + north side views
The only route approaching from the north — from the Kenyan border — the Rongai offers a completely different perspective of the mountain. The northern slopes are drier and offer clear views into Kenya. It is one of the less-travelled routes, adding to its appeal for those seeking a quieter climb.
The descent follows the Marangu Route, adding route variety. Summit success rates are high, partly because the northern approach provides better acclimatisation conditions.
If summit success and scenery are priorities — choose Lemosho. If you want adventure and can handle a tougher climb — Machame. If comfort is paramount — Marangu. If you want solitude and unique views — Rongai. Still unsure? Contact our guides and we will match the right route to your fitness and experience level.
