The Definitive Kilimanjaro Packing List: Every Item You Need

📅 2025-02-05 7 min read✍️ AMG Safaris Team
Kilimanjaro's altitude range — from tropical rainforest to arctic summit — means you are packing for five different climates in a single bag. And you will be carrying most of it yourself. This is the precise list our guides recommend.

The Layering System

The key to Kilimanjaro clothing is a three-layer system that you can add to or remove as conditions change from warm forest to freezing summit.

Base Layer (worn against skin)

  • 2–3 moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts (merino wool or synthetic)
  • 2–3 pairs of moisture-wicking underwear
  • 2 pairs of trekking socks (merino wool) — pack more for longer routes
  • Thermal leggings for summit night

Mid Layer (insulation)

  • Heavy fleece or softshell jacket
  • Fleece trousers or warm hiking trousers
  • Insulated down jacket (essential for summit and cold nights above 3,500m)

Outer Layer (weather protection)

  • Waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex or similar jacket (Kilimanjaro's Machame and Lemosho routes cross rain zones)
  • Waterproof over-trousers
  • Summit gloves: a liner plus a waterproof outer mitt
  • Balaclava or warm hat
  • Neck gaiter or buff

Footwear

This is the most important gear decision. Your boots must be:

  • Waterproof — gaiters are not mandatory but help
  • Ankle-supporting — the Barranco Wall and Lemosho descent are technical
  • Fully broken in before Tanzania — never bring new boots to Kilimanjaro
  • Stiff-soled for scree (loose volcanic rock on the summit approach)

Technical Equipment

  • Trekking poles (collapsible) — transformative on descents
  • Daypack (25–35L) for water, layers, camera
  • Sleeping bag: rated to -10°C / 14°F minimum (most camps provide liners)
  • Headlamp + spare batteries (summit starts at midnight)
  • Water bottles or hydration bladder (3L minimum — hydration is critical for acclimatisation)
  • Water purification tablets as backup

Health & Pharmacy

  • Acetazolamide (Diamox) — discuss with your doctor pre-trip (prescribed AMS prevention)
  • Ibuprofen / paracetamol for headaches
  • Blister plasters and moleskin
  • Zinc oxide tape for hotspot prevention
  • Personal prescription medications (at least double supply)

The Duffel Bag Rule

Your porters will carry your main bag (14–15 kg maximum). Keep your day pack light — water, layers, camera, snacks, small first-aid kit only. AMG porters are KPAP-certified and carry proper loads — we do not exceed limits.

Equipment Hire

AMG Safaris can arrange equipment hire in Moshi for items like sleeping bags, trekking poles, and gaiters. Contact us when booking if you need this service.
