Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a self-contained Eden where the Big Five roam beneath towering crater walls.
About Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most extraordinary natural wonders — the largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera on the planet. Formed when a giant volcano collapsed some two to three million years ago, its walls now rise 600 metres above a 260-square-kilometre crater floor that shelters an astonishing density of wildlife.
Often called the “Garden of Eden,” the crater is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, including one of the best chances anywhere to see the endangered black rhino in the wild. Because the steep walls naturally contain the ecosystem, game viewing here is reliable and concentrated, making it one of the few places on Earth where you can realistically see all of the Big Five in a single day.
The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a pioneering example of multi-use land, where Maasai pastoralists graze their cattle alongside abundant wildlife — a living landscape as culturally rich as it is ecologically remarkable.

Ngorongoro Crater FAQs
Yes — the crater is one of the few places in Africa where all of the Big Five are present, and seeing them in a single day is a realistic possibility, including the rare black rhino.
A full-day crater descent is the classic experience. Most itineraries spend one to two nights on the rim or in nearby Karatu.
Very much so — the reliable wildlife and shorter game drives make it ideal for children and first-time safari-goers.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges a crater descent fee that supports conservation and the Maasai community. We include all park and crater fees in our quotes.
